Fishing - Why?

I've been reading Pete's blogs...very interesting, I don't know he comes up with so much to talk about. I suppose for someone who has done nothing but study for the last 4 weeks it's easy to forget about other things that go on around you. Did my last exam yesterday and last night I was twiddling my thumbs wondering what to do! It was strange having spare time.
One thing I won't be doing is fishing. I really don't get that as a hobby. Like Pete, I take the chance when it's fine to cycle to work. It's a nice ride along the Chesterfield canal, the only thing that ruins it is the fishermen. A lot of them have these really long rods that go right across the canal and the footpath. I wonder what for? They all look miserable to me and no-one ever seems to catch anything. Can someone explain why fishing is fun. I'm a sporty person, I like Rugby League, Football, Cricket (all forms from Twenty20 to Test matches), Snooker... I'm sure theres plenty of folk out there who will find my sports boring and why not. I think walking as a hobby is dull but I understand why people would like it. But not fishing!
